How do I replace a garage door opener battery?

Turn off power to the opener, disconnect the old battery negative-first, connect the new battery positive-first, then test it on battery power. The swap takes about ten minutes and needs no special tools.

  1. Cut the power. Unplug the garage door opener or switch off its breaker before you touch the battery. This prevents shorts and shocks.
