1. Sitting partly discharged. The single biggest killer. Sulfation forms on the plates within days and permanently takes capacity.
2. How deep you run it before recharging. Shallow discharges buy far more total cycles than deep ones. Riding into the red and then recharging is much harder on the battery than topping up at half.
3. Charging consistency. A nightly full charge is the whole ballgame for a daily rider. Sealed lead acid has no charge memory, so there's no such thing as charging it too often.
4. Freezing while discharged. Fully charged it won't freeze until around −55 °C; discharged, around −15 °C, and freezing is permanent.
5. Sustained heat. Accelerates plate corrosion and dries the cells out. The 10–30 °C (50–86 °F) window in the articles is as much about lifespan as charge speed.
6. Charger match and quality. A mismatched or non-smart charger overcharges, gasses off electrolyte you can't replace, and there's no recovering it.
7. Leaving it on a dumb charger indefinitely. Smart chargers taper; basic ones don't. The 24-hour outer limit in the articles exists for this.
8. Cycle count and calendar age. Roughly 300 to 500 cycles, which lands at 12 to 18 months of daily use, stretching toward three years with light use.
9. Pack mismatch on a 24V scooter. A weak battery in series drags the healthy one down and stresses it, so one old battery shortens the life of its new partner. The reason for matched pairs.
10. Terminal corrosion and loose connections. Adds resistance, which makes the charger misread state of charge and chronically undercharge the pack.
